Meet Big Girl, a 6 year old, female, albino Olive python (Liasis olivaceus).
This beautiful snake presented to the clinic with 2 large swellings in her coelom. Based on their location and the breeding history, these swellings were consistent with retained eggs. She had already produced 9 viable eggs that were considerably smaller than the two that were retained. After performing an ultrasound, it was confirmed that the eggs were non viable. They had been retained for two weeks post laying the rest of the clutch.
The eggs were firmly situated high up in the body and it was considered too risky to attempt removal without surgery. The surgery was performed with the pictures and explanations below. There were no complications and she recovered well from the procedure.
